Your sorting log
Kept on this device only. It measures what Bin Check changed: items that would have gone in the wrong bin, and roughly how much stayed out of landfill.
What changed in 2026
On January 1, 2026, Ontario's Blue Box moved to producer responsibility and Circular Materials took over Toronto's residential Blue Bin. The City's open data file is from November 2023, so these items would be sorted wrong by anything that reads it directly. Bin Check fixes them.
How it works, sources and limits
- Data: the City of Toronto Waste Wizard lookup table (2,206 items, file dated November 27, 2023) from Toronto Open Data, plus the 2026 Blue Bin list from Circular Materials, the Ontario Deposit Return Program and the AGCO, each linked on the answer it changes.
- Search: typo tolerant, plural aware, with everyday synonyms (styrofoam, pop, tinfoil, K-Cup).
- Photos: MobileCLIP S0, a small image model from Apple, runs in your browser with ONNX Runtime. It compares your photo with 153 short descriptions of 81 common items. It shows its top three guesses and how sure it is, and you pick the right one. Nothing is uploaded.
- Limits: this is a guide, not the City's ruling. The photo model knows 81 kinds of item, not all 2,206, so search covers the rest. Weights in the log are rough typical weights. Rules for apartments and businesses can differ.
